Four sisters and 36 years

1975

Back in 1975, American photographer Nicholas Nixon captured by his camera general portrait of the four sisters, among whom was his wife Bibi. From the moment the picture was to make an annual tradition.  In total, the project eventually lasted exactly thirty-six years. At the time of the first shot, the youngest of the sisters, Mimi, was fifteen years old. And at the time of the last photo, the eldest sister, Bibi, was already 61. The series is called "Brown Sisters" These photos can not be considered highly artistic. However, the project itself is quite interesting to observe how the maturation. Ghosts of War — WWII Photos on to Modern Street Scenes

History is often seen as a subject of cramming – what we often don’t appreciate, is how intertwined it is with our present. Dutch historian Jo Hedwig Teeuwisse tries to demonstrate that very literally with her Ghosts of  War photo series, where she blends the present day and the original World War II pictures of the same place into one. Jo spends hours looking for the locations and taking pictures that match the originals, and then photoshops them to combine the war ghosts into the current settings.

“I try to make people realise that history is all around us. That where you live, work or go to school, once people fought, died or simply experienced a different kind of life. We are history, history is us,” – she says.

Interactive Photo Series Compares NYC's Past and Present

New York City is constantly evolving and growing, making it difficult to document every change that has occurred, but NYC Grid is taking a stab at it. Run by Paul Sahner the ambitious website seeks to map the entire city "street by street and block by block" through photos. In addition to simply capturing present-day neighborhoods, though, the site also gives a peek of what specific areas looked like in the past, comparing the two in its "Before & After" section.

Each location examined in this catalog presents a side-by-side look at one perspective of the designated place, revealing the differences and similarities over decades and even a century. With a moveable, dividing slider going straight down the middle, visitors are given the opportunity to shift between the past and present. This interactive element reveals changes across time with great ease. Photographer Sebastian Magnani’s Dogs Dressed Like Owners

Man’s best friend gets the designer treatment in an amazing series of portraits that feature dogs dressed identically to their owners. Depicted with hair, caps and jewelry, the beautifully bizarre portraits of dogs and humans share uncanny resemblances to one another.

Created by Swiss photographer and graphic designer Sebastian Magnani, “Underdogs” began as a pet project in 2009. On his website, he describes the meaning behind the series:

“So where does this striking resemblance between dog and owner come from? Does the “underdog” really rank himself lower, even visually? It is undisputed that the canines not only stir emotions and interest, but also our inner most needs. Aerial View of Eixample — Barcelona

Eixample is a district of the Spanish city of Barcelona, that lies between the old city and the surrounding small towns. The district was built as an extension (hence the name “Eixample”) when Barcelona started to grow during the middle of the 19th century. The 7.5 square km district is characterized by long straight streets, a strict grid pattern crossed by wide avenues, and octagonal city blocks - rectangular blocks with the corners cut off, which are distinctive for Barcelona. This was the visionary, pioneering design by Spanish urban planner Ildefons Cerdà, who considered traffic and transport along with sunlight and ventilation in coming up with his characteristic octagonal blocks.

Cerdà’s central aim was to overcome social problems by using quadrangular blocks of a standard size, with strict building controls to ensure that they were built up on only two sides, to a limited height, leaving a shady square or garden in between. This recreational open space with open sides to the blocks was to guarantee the houses the maximum amount of sun, light and ventilation. The angled corners allowed the streets to broaden at every intersection making for greater visibility, and fluid traffic in all directions. Cerdà had steam trams in mind, and it was its long turning radius which determined the angle of the corners of the buildings. Extraordinary Photographs of Animals Inside the Womb

The experience of most detailed embryonic animal photographs ever taken. Using revolutionary four-dimensional scanning technology, scientists have shed light on the world of animals inside the womb, including that of dolphins, sharks, dogs, penguins, and elephants. The images are from a National Geographic Documentary called “Extraordinary Animals in the Womb” and were captured by using a combination of three-dimensional ultrasound scans, computer graphics and small cameras to document the animals’ development from conception to birth. The documentary serves as “testimony to the strong relatedness of all mammals.”
